Planning a group trip to Napa can be tricky. Most visitors want to dive head-first into wine tastings, and who can blame them. As the undisputed champion of American fine wine culture, Napa is synonymous with great wine. But while wine beckons most, some prefer to skip alcohol but still want to experience the beauty, flavors and hospitality that make Napa so special. And  grows, it becomes more likely that the party will contain a mix of drinkers and non-drinkers. From corporate teams to bachelorette parties to family gatherings, a diversity of interests and intentions abound during a wine country visit. Our Zero Proof walking tour is the perfect group outing to bring everyone together to explore downtown Napa, share creative drinks, savor innovative dishes, and enjoy the kind of connection that makes any trip unforgettable.

For more than 25 years, I have worked in fine wine and hospitality throughout Napa Valley. I know well the subtleties of creating experiences that are rich, engaging, and memorable. Our expertise is grounded in a deep understanding of wine-country culture, yet I recognize that the landscape of Napa tourism is evolving. Just a few short years ago (pre-pandemic), offering a zero-proof tour anywhere, let alone Napa, might have seemed too niche and unlikely to attract a critical mass of consumer interest. Back then, NA brands like Athletic Brewing, All The Bitter, Spritless, Ghia, Seedlip Aplós and Lyres were just beginning to come to market. Thanks to these brands and many more, the hospitality and beverage culture has shifted dramatically to support the fast-growing consumer interest in NA adult beverages. The rise of mindful drinking, sober curiosity, and wellness tourism has created fertile ground for tours like ours to thrive.

I have seen all types of participants on our tours. Some never started drinking alcohol. Others are in recovery. Many enjoy alcohol occasionally, while some drink regularly but welcome a break for a few hours. That last cohort, regular drinkers hitting the pause button for a few hours, matches my mindset and is an accurate description for most people who join our Zero Proof Tours.

Regardless of their relationship with alcohol, our tours allow every guest to engage fully without compromise. That is crucial in a group setting. The last thing anyone wants is to feel like a second-class participant, receiving a lesser experience because of their choice not to drink. After years of seeing designated drivers, pregnant woman and non-drinkers being offered water and soda when accompanying their wine-loving friends to Napa, I’m excited to offer an experience that satisfies everyone equally.

Why Groups Benefit From Zero-Proof Tours

In planning a group outing to Napa, event organizers, corporate teams, and friends alike face a perennial challenge: how to design experiences that appeal to everyone. Traditional wine tastings often marginalize non-drinkers, whether consciously or not. They may feel awkward, excluded, or simply bored. Our Zero Proof Tours eliminate that barrier. Everyone participates in the same curated experiences, enjoys the same thoughtful pairings, and shares the same social energy. There is no distinction between drinkers and nondrinkers in how the tour is experienced.

Demographics are shifting, and the data supports what I have seen firsthand. According to recent surveys, nearly 30% of adults aged 21–40 in the U.S. are choosing to drink less or abstain entirely. Gen Z leads this trend, with a significant portion reporting that they are “sober curious” or intentionally limiting alcohol for wellness reasons. In this environment, group activities that fail to include nondrinkers risk excluding a substantial segment of the population.

The Zero-Proof Napa Experience: What To Expect

While every tour can be tailored to the group, most last about 2.5 hours and feature 4 – 6 stops throughout downtown Napa. Each location offers something different, yet all are connected by a commitment to hospitality, creativity, and inclusivity.

At Wilfred’s Lounge, guests enjoy vibrant, island-inspired zero-proof cocktails that rival any traditional mixology experience. Napa Yard provides a modern, relaxed space to explore innovative beverages, pairing them with small bites and local flavors. Fieldwork Brewing offers a playful detour with nonalcoholic craft beers and a collection of light and fruity artisanal mocktail RTDs. The Fink showcases imaginative creations from Proprietor, Judd Finkelstein, and Beverage Director, Andrew Salazar. From mocktail twists on classics to bespoke concoctions found nowhere else, The Fink offers flavors to please any palate served in a one-of-a-kind, cozy-nautical environment. And a visit to Wine Girl is punctuated by festive ambiance, bustling energy and a taste of the best NA sparkling wine paired with a locally crafted sweet treat.

This is just a sampling of some of the stops on our tour, and it is important to note that while these stops are all possibilities, no tour includes every single location. We customize each experience based on group preferences, timing, and logistical considerations. What remains consistent is that each stop is designed for full participation, engagement, and enjoyment for all attendees.

Building Connection Without Compromise

I recently hosted a great bunch of executives who all work remotely for the same health care company. Some in the group had worked alongside others for years but had never met in person. I should mention that this “corporate outing” was not a company sponsored event, but a mutually agreed upon trip that was planned, executed and funded by the participants. Some drove to Napa from their NorCal homes while others flew in from other states to bond and mingle with their extended team in wine country. It was entertaining to watch each of them arrive and approach me at the entrance of Napa Yard and introduce themselves, sometimes for the first time, to their longstanding coworkers.

About a third of the group were nondrinkers, and they built a Napa itinerary that was wine country focused as well is 100% inclusive. When you search for “what can nondrinkers do in Napa?” NZP Tours is increasingly showing up at the top of the list! In addition to our Walking Tour, this group found Castello di Amorosa as another exciting inclusive spot for drinkers and nondrinkers. Owned and built by Dario Sattui, of V. Sattui Winery fame, Castello di Amorosa is a full sized, authentically built 13th century Tuscan castle. You really have to see it to believe it. In addition to making a wide array of traditional wines, they produce a line of alcohol removed wines called Libero as well as grape juice made from wine varietals like Muscat Canelli, Gewruztraminer and others.

Now, I’m not going to tell you that a flight of alcohol-removed wine (and unfermented grape juice) equates to a flight of wine from Napa or anywhere else, but I will point out that this group of co-remote-workers eagerly raced up Highway 29 to St Helena (fully sober, after 2+ hours on my tour) to make it to their tastings at Castello di Amorosa. The Castle’s thoughtful, unique and fully realized NA flight allows the NA people to join their wine-loving friends in a tasting experience at this singular and grand venue.

Data and Trends: Why Now is the Perfect Time

There’s a debate in the wine world and in the BevAlc industry more generally. Everyone wants to know if the recent downturn in alcohol sales is cyclical or structural. Though I have my own opinions on the matter, I won’t share them here because the answer is irrelevant. The fact is, at the moment, consumers are more interested than ever in exploring NA options and incorporating them increasingly into their lifestyles. The rise of nonalcoholic and low-alcohol beverages is more than a fad; it is a fundamental shift in how people approach socializing, wellness, and travel. Nielsen data shows that the nonalcoholic beverage market has grown significantly in the past five years, with particular strength in categories like sparkling nonalcoholic wines, craft nonalcoholic beers, and botanical mocktails. Research from Skift indicates that travelers increasingly prioritize wellness, mindful consumption, and inclusivity when choosing experiences. Who can say how long this will last, but for now it’s clear that groups visiting Napa are no exception to this trend. In a world where demographic and cultural preferences continue to evolve, our Zero Proof Tours offer a solution that is not only timely but necessary for modern Napa hospitality.

Designing Tours for Every Group

While we typically host corporate groups, bachelorette parties, or gatherings of friends, our tours are flexible. Group size, timing, and pacing are all adjustable, ensuring each experience is tailored to the participants. The focus is always on inclusion, engagement, and enjoyment.

We also prioritize accessibility and comfort. The walking portion is manageable for most, stops are thoughtfully spaced, and each location is chosen for quality, atmosphere, and hospitality standards. For event planners or corporate organizers, this means a predictable, high-quality experience that delights every participant.
